In the history of Modern Europe, islands have generally been considered as passive spaces. Historically, however, Mediterranean island societies have played important—and often active—roles in the formation of nation-states and in nation-building processes. Little attention has been paid to the ways in which island societies have affected mainland nationalism. This article argues that Mediterranean islands offered rhetorical and symbolic elements that proved useful for the construction of mainland European national identities, largely because islandness, from a continental perspective, was seen as capable of conserving authenticity. This article draws upon the Mediterranean island case studies of Sardinia and Corsica and their relationships to Catalan nationalism, French nationalism, and Italian nationalism as well as wider nation-building processes.

L'Alguer (Alghero in Italian, S'Alighera in Sardinian) is a coastal town on the Island of Sardinia. Founded by the powerful Genoese family of the Doria, in 1354 it fell in the hands of the Kingdom of Aragon, as one of the first strongholds in a long war to conquer the whole island. The town was entirely evacuated by its Genoese-Sardinian inhabitants, and repopulated by Catalans settlers. Nowadays its inhabitants speak dialectal forms of Catalan, influenced by Sardinian and Italian, despite the institutional link to the others parts of the Aragonese Crown broke down in the aftermath of the War of Spanish Succession. The existence of this Catalan-speaking community aroused interest and curiosity between intellectuals and politicians, particularly the nationalists, from the Reinaxença until today. Currently l'Alguer is included in the map of the Països Catalans [Catalan-speaking territories]. Nonetheless, the small town is bereft of a Catalan nationalist movement, only a minority have passed from a folkloric and cultural view to a more political interpretation of the relationship with the linguistic 'homeland'. This paper aims to analyse the reasons of the invisibility of Catalonia as motherland seen (or unseen) from the Mediterranean city.

In the modern era relationship between l'Alguer-Alghero, the catalan minority in the island of Sardinia, and the rest of the catalan-speaking comunity, have been complicated, mainly during the Franco and Mussolini dictatorships and after the II World War. This article deals about thoose relationships and his renewal in the decades on `50 and `60, due by two importants events: the so called “rediscovery cruise” of 1960 and a catalan poetry contest celebrated in the sardinian city the year 1961; the article also talks about the political dimension of thoose events, both for the catalans and citizens of l'Alguer-Alghero.

This article examines the reclamation project of a marsh area in the north-west of Sardinia, a plain called Nurra, near the city of Alghero, that was planned during the fascist regime. The project included the building of a new town, Fertilia, and the colonization of the entire area exclusively by peasants from the province of Ferrara. The marsh area was under the administration of the Alghero city administration, the nearest urban centre, that was also the only Catalan speaking minority in Sardinia and Italy. Analyzing the case study of the new ...
